September 22nd : Sage Po

Sage Po will be presented in a recital at Kresge Theater on September 22nd, performing a program of harp showpieces spanning from Domenico Scarlatti to Ami Maayani. The concert is a winners' recital for the 2013 Pittsburgh Concert Society Major Auditions held on April 19th and 20th.

Congratulations to four of our student members who participated in the 2013 AHS National Competition in Los Angeles!

In the Intermediate I Division Sophia Sunha Lee won 1st place and Jessica Ding won 3rd place. In the Advanced Division Sage Po won 2nd place and Chelsea Lane was a finalist.

At the winners' recital on in Zipper Hall at the Colburn School of Music in Los Angeles, Sunha performed Impromptu by Gliere and Sage performed Maqamat by Ami Maayani.

Heidi Van Hoesen Gorton was a judge in the Young Professional and Intermediate II Divisions.

May 3rd : Chelsea Lane

Chelsea Lane was the winner of the Joseph Lentilhon Selden Memorial Junior Award awarded by Yale's Council of Masters. Chelsea received the award for her musical contributions to campus, a prize which is "given each year to a member of the junior class of Yale College whose verve, idealism, and constructive interest in music and the humanities exemplify those qualities for which Selden is remembered."

Chelsea Lane, junior music major at Yale, was this year's winner of the William Waite Concerto Competition. She will perform the Glière Harp Concerto with the Yale Symphony Orchestra in their 2013-2014 season.

April 20th - Sage Po

Sage Po was selected as a winner from over 40 competitors in the 2013 Pittsburgh Concert Society Major Auditions on April 19th and 20th. She will be presented in a recital at Kresge Theater on September 22nd, where she is to perform her winning program of harp showpieces spanning from Domenico Scarlatti to Ami Maayani.

In the 2013 American String Teachers Association National Solo Competition, which was held April 6 - 8, 2013, at Merkin Hall, in New York City, Jessica Ding was the Junior Division winner in the harp category, receiving a prize of $500. Natalie Severson was a Senior Division finalist.

September 5th : Duo Harp Recital

Courtney Hershey Bress (SSA '92), Principal Harpist of the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, and Kathleen Bride, Professor of Harp at the Eastman School of Music will perform a duo harp recital at 7:30 p.m. at The Hillman Center for Performing Arts, 423 Fox Chapel Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15238.

The works will be primarily by French composers, including Tournier, Debussy, Franck, Baur, and Inghelbrecht.

Lucy Sandrett and the harp students at the Creative and Performing Arts 6-12 School downtown will present a Celebration of the Harp Concert at 7:00 pm. The concert will include harp solos, harp ensemble and chamber ensemble works with other CAPA music students. CAPA teachers Dena Miller and Dale Hertrick will conduct the ensembles. This fund-raiser for harp maintenance at CAPA will highlight chamber ensemble works featuring the harp. All are welcome to attend.

Lucy Scandrett will perform with the Oakland Girls Choir under the direction of Kathryn Barnard at 7:30 pm at The First Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh. Natalie Severson, student of Gretchen Van Hoesen, was the First Place winner in Undergraduate Section of Carnegie Mellon University’s 2013 Concerto Competition. Natalie played Alberto Ginastera’s Harp Concerto, and as a Competition winner, will be performing next season with the CMU Philharmonic.

Three students of Gretchen Van Hoesen were winners in the 3rd Annual Mid-Atlantic Harp Festival Scholarship Competition, sponsored by the Washington DC Chapter of the AHS. In the Young Artist Category, 1st Prize of $100 was won by Hannah Piston, and 2nd Prize of $75 by Jessica Ding. In the Emerging Artist Category, Jadelyn Ding won the #rd Prize of $25.

Rebecca Pfingstl was one of the Pittsburgh Concert Society Young Artists Audition winners. In addition to receiving a $500 Anna and Benjamin Perlow Scholarship to help further her musical education, Rebecca will perform in the recital at Carnegie Mellon University’s Kresge Theatre on March 17th at 2:00 p.m. More is information at www.pittsburghconcertsociety.org.

Harpist Sage Po and cellist Evan Kahn will present their sophomore recital on Valentine's Day, February 14th, at 7:30 p.m. in Carnegie Mellon University's Kresge Theater.

Works will include a special performance of the 4th movement of Henriette Renie's Trio for Harp, Violin and Cello with guest violinist Samantha Kline. Also, Sage will be joined by Rodrigo Ojeda for Debussy's Danses Sacree et Profane.

Natalie Stafford, CMU harp student of Gretchen Van Hoesen, will perform her junior harp recital as partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Bachelor of Music degree. This free solo recital will take place at Alumni Concert Hall in the College of Fine Arts, Carnegie Mellon University. Natalie will perform works by Hindemith, Tournier, Pierne and Dussek. She will also perform the Mozart Flute and Harp Concerto with flutist Sarah Steranko.

Natalie Severson, student of Gretchen Van Hoesen, will perform a solo senior harp recital at Carnegie Mellon University as partial fulfillment of the Bachelor of Music Degree Program. She will perform works by Tournier, Parish-Alvars, Guridi and Ginastera. Pianist Rodrigo Ojeda will accompany her in the Concerto for Harp by Ginastera. Natalie is expected to be awarded her BM degree in harp performance in June 2013.
